Donner Lake

Donner Lake lies about two miles west of Truckee and is about 3 miles long and about 1 mile wide. The lake really turns on in the springtime and there is a nice population of giant Mackinaw lake trout. Using downriggers, locals troll the main channel from 100-200 feet and will move shallower after a trout plant. The Mackinaw trout will often feast on planted rainbows and browns in the shallows right after a scheduled plant. Troll the east end and the boat ramp area and the Donner Tahoe Beach stretch for hungry Mackinaw. At this time, switch to either a rainbow or brown trout pattern minnow plug and troll 30-60 feet. The larger brown trout can often be taken spot-casting larger gold Kastmasters and Hopkins spoons into deeper water. Bait fishermen can also score some nice catches with nightcrawlers, live crickets and grasshoppers.
